Softening of the Hertz indentation contact in nematic elastomers

چکیده
Polydomain liquid crystalline (nematic) elastomers have highly unusual mechanical properties, dominated by the dramatically nonlinear stress–strain response that reflects stress-induced evolution of domain patterns. Here, we study classical Hertz indentation problem in such a material. Experimentally, find polydomain nematic display smaller exponent than 3/2 load vs. depth response. This is puzzling: asymptotically softer requires larger at small loads. We resolve this theory where three regimes are identified — an initial elastic regime for shallow obscured experiment, intermediate local pattern leads to scaling agreement with experiments, and final stiffening completion returns elastic. three-regime structure universal, but not. discuss how our work supports new mechanism enhanced adhesion pressure-sensitive elastomers.

Stress–softening and recovery of elastomers
A constitutive model is developed for the mechanical response of elastomers at finite strains. A polymer is treated as a network of linear chains linked by permanent (chemical crosslinks) and temporary (entanglements and van der Waals forces) junctions. Temporary junctions are assumed to be in two states: loose (passive) when they impose only topological constrains on available configurations o...

We present a theory for uniaxial nematic elastomers with variable asphericity. As an application of the theory, we consider the time-independent, isochoric extension of a right circular cylinder. Numerical solutions to the resulting differential equation are obtained for a range of extensions. For sufficiently large extensions, there exists an isotropic core of material surrounding the cylinder...

We study the linear dynamic-mechanical response of monodomain nematic liquid crystalline elastomers under shear in the geometry that allows the director rotation. The aspects of time-temperature superposition are discussed at some length and Master Curves are obtained between the glassy state and the nematic transition temperature Tni. However, the time-temperature superposition did not work th...

We consider the equilibrium stress-strain behavior of polydomain liquid crystal elastomers (PLCEs). We show that there is a fundamental difference between PLCEs cross-linked in the high temperature isotropic and low temperature aligned states. PLCEs cross-linked in the isotropic state then cooled to an aligned state will exhibit extremely soft elasticity (confirmed by recent experiments) and or...

Nematic Elastomers (NEs) possess very interesting properties stemming from the interaction between liquid crystal order and rubber elasticity. For such materials, thermally-induced phase transition from the isotropic to the nematic phase may induce very large distortions, which in turn can affect the overall configuration of a macroscopic specimen. The behavior of NEs can be well modeled within...
